New Dubai directory makes face checks a condition of listing

A new Dubai directory for platonic company has opened for registration, and it will not let anyone appear in its listings until they have passed a live face check and had every photograph approved by a moderator.

DubaiGirlfriend went live this month. The service connects people in Dubai who want company for coffee, a meal, an event or a social outing. It is not a dating service and does not permit paid or intimate arrangements of any kind, a boundary the site states in its terms and says it enforces by removing accounts.

The approach inverts the usual order of things. On most listing sites a profile goes up immediately and checks happen later, if at all. Here the directory stays closed to a new member until several conditions are met at once.

What it takes to get listed

A member must confirm their email address, complete their profile, upload between five and ten photographs and have each one individually approved, nominate one approved image as a cover photo, and pass a liveness check in which their face is matched against the pictures they have submitted. Miss any one of those and the listing stays private. There is no queue-jumping and, according to the site, no manual override available to staff.

The profile itself asks for a first name, one of 26 Dubai areas, the languages the member speaks, their interests, and an introduction of at least 40 characters. Email addresses and telephone numbers are never displayed, and members are told not to put contact details in their profiles or in a first message.

Age is restricted to 18 and over.

The verification claim, narrowly defined

Verified profiles carry a small tick, and the site is unusually specific about what that mark does and does not mean.

It means the person completed a live capture and that the face in that capture matched the photographs on the profile. It is a statement that the person is real and is who they appear to be in their pictures. It is not a background check, a criminal records check or a character reference, and the site says so in plain language on its philosophy page rather than in a footnote.

The capture itself is handled by a third-party verification provider. DubaiGirlfriend stores only the outcome of the check, together with a match score and the relevant dates. The selfie and the video recorded during the check are processed by the provider and are not retained by the site.

Registration is open now, and listings will begin appearing as members complete verification and review.

How members make contact

There is no open messaging. A visitor who wants to reach a listed member sends a connection request, and no conversation exists until that request is accepted.

Declining requires no explanation. The site's published position is that an unanswered request has been answered, and that persisting after a refusal is grounds for losing the account. Members can block another user outright, and a report link sits on every profile and every conversation. Reports go to moderators and are described as confidential.

Both reporting routes are separate from the site's general contact form, a distinction the site draws deliberately so that complaints about a member do not end up in a general inbox.

Photographs are rebuilt, not just stored

Uploaded images are not kept as supplied. Each one is decoded and re-encoded from raw pixels, which discards everything wrapped around the image data: location coordinates, camera and device identifiers, colour profiles and any other material appended to the original file.

It is a detail most users will never notice, and it closes a well-known leak. Photographs taken on a phone routinely carry the coordinates of where they were taken, and sites that publish uploads untouched have historically published those coordinates along with them.

Each approved photograph is then rendered into six sizes across three image formats, so that a visitor's browser downloads the smallest version that will do. A single reduced master copy is kept privately for moderation and re-generation, and is never served to the public.

Built deliberately light

The directory pages make no third-party requests. There are no external fonts, no embedded analytics scripts and no advertising tags, which means the pages load without contacting any server other than the site's own, and without the passive tracking that normally accompanies a commercial listings site.

The site runs on plain PHP with a single small stylesheet and a minimal amount of deferred JavaScript. Rate limiting is applied to sensitive actions, and network addresses are stored only as keyed hashes rather than in the clear.

A second domain, dxbgf.com, redirects to the main address.

Sample content is labelled as such

One further policy is worth noting, because it is one most directories do not bother to make explicit. Any fictional profile used during development is flagged in the database as a sample, is hidden in production by configuration, and cannot be published as a member under any circumstance. The restriction is enforced in code rather than left to administrative discipline.

That matters in a category where padding a thin directory with invented listings has been a recurring practice.

The gap it is aiming at

Dubai has an unusually mobile population. A large share of residents arrive for work on fixed-term contracts, and social circles here tend to form around employers and nationalities, both of which are efficient and narrow. Newcomers frequently report that practical life assembles quickly while ordinary company takes far longer.

Existing options sit awkwardly either side of the need. Dating platforms assume romantic intent and sort users accordingly. Interest groups require a shared hobby, a fixed schedule and a crowd. Neither addresses the simpler request of finding someone to have dinner with on a Thursday.

Whether a verification-first model can build a directory quickly enough to be useful is the open question. Requiring a face check and manual photo review before anyone appears is a deliberate brake on growth, and the site has chosen to accept the slower start.

DubaiGirlfriend is live at dubaigirlfriend.com. Registration is free and open to adults in Dubai.
